Gorleben 365-20In ZEGG we know how necessary it is to actively build up viable alternatives, such as communities. But we also see the necessity of preventing things that pose long-term threats to life, such as nuclear energy. So 15 of us from ZEGG and the Fläming region set off to take part in the "Gorleben 365" action, blocking the access road to the construction site for the long-term nuclear waste repository there for a day on May 16 (www.gorleben365.de).

It is obvious that the repository is being expanded, despite claims to the contrary, and our action was designed to show that we do not agree with this expansion. We arrived the day before and were met by a member of the Gorleben 365 action group, who briefed us and supported us throughout our blockade day. By obstructing the access road we were able to block two of the six gates, hindering the (high levels of) traffic to and from the repository, which had to follow a diversion. This time we were not able to completely prevent the traffic from reaching the site – the action was intended to be more of a protest than a full confrontation. During the blockade we sang together, led by Hagara Feinbier, Roland Ficht and Barbara Stützel, strengthening our community feeling and giving everyone strength during short risky moments.

By being a spanner in the works for a day we hope we have helped to reduce public acceptance for the costly and morally questionable conversion of the Gorleben salt dome into a nuclear waste repository.
